André, a young resident of a Brazilian industrial area, happens to find the diary of Cristiano, one of the workers of the aluminium smelter that dominates the area and who has just died alone in his hospital bed. His diary dictates the action of the film, oscillating between the fairytale and the political chronicle of a man who has always lived at the margins of a class-based society. Cristiano’s tale traces a long pathway beginning in prison and ending in the industrial neighbourhood of Ouro Preto where he died, with work on orange plantations, money troubles, exploitation by various bosses, but also very beautiful moments of friendship, music shared, and love. Araby is a filmic fable about the state of invisibility of workers within the mighty capitalist machine – those who have no voice and no rostrum to speak from. A poetic act of resistance.(Elena Lopez Riera)

Affonso Uchõa and João Dumans, who is also a scriptwriter, had already worked together on The Hidden Tiger, co-written by João, and directed by Affonso.
