Ali, a sport’s writer, can’t cry over his brother’s death. Haunted by its memory through his daily life, he quits his job and ends up being the focus of interest of his family and friends who worry about him.

Alireza Motamedi is a graduate of Persian Literature and is a writer, poet, film critic and scriptwriter. His debut feature film Reza was awarded the Ciné + Prize at Entrevues in 2018. Won’t you cry? is his second feature film.

NOTICE OF THE SELECTION COMITEE

Following in the footsteps of Reza, filmmaker and performer Alireza Motamedi continues his emotional analysis of the contemporary Iranian male. Leaving behind the overtly comical tone of the previous film, Won't You Cry? takes Motamedi's cinema to the side of drama; we dare not speak of melodrama, the focal point of the film being that Ali has lost his ability to cry. A play on genres and feelings that, doubled with the self-portrait of the filmmaker as a depressive, evokes Nanni Moretti. At first glance rawer than Reza, the direction of Won't You Cry? seems to want to settle its accounts with a certain Iranian cinema: by showcasing the grayish and marked-out universes (offices, police stations, sport's world) which became the expedients of the Iranian production. Assuming his characters' eccentricity and originality, Motamedi affirms his taste for dandy, gritty and poetic cinema.
