Koban Louzoù

Brieuc Schieb studied Aesthetics at the Sorbonne before joining the Decorative Arts of Paris (EnsAD). He directed his first film La Tourbière in 2019, shown the same year at FID Marseille.

 

NOTICE OF THE SELECTION COMITEE 

One of the striking ideas of Koban Louzoù is to concretely raise the question of how to depict utopia. Very quickly, and without invalidating or mocking, we perceive the difficulties and  shortcomings of its implementation. But especially the individual hindrances and frustrations which result from it. Thanks to a harsh (the grain of the image evokes that of the camcorders of the 90s/00's) and attentive (mainly in static close-up shots, few camera movement) direction, leaving room for the hesitations and silences of the characters, Brieuc Schieb allows a form of uneasiness to settle in, which will turn out to be salutary. If the figure of Aymeric (portrayed with great delicacy by filmmaker Virgil Vernier), a leader who turns out to be paranoid and authoritarian, seems to crystallize the tensions and comes closest to a desire for parody, we must keep in mind the film's subtitle: the hut and the remedy. Under the caring gaze of the filmmaker, each person becomes worthy of interest, even in his or her saddest quirks. Here the power of the word is that it is the bearer of care.
