Films have always been haunted by mysteries: this year’s Transversale programme is a deep dive into Disappearances.
It’s no wonder that Georges Méliès’ first film The Vanishing Lady (1896) is a thoroughly fascinating trick: the filmmaking wizard makes a woman suddenly disappear through his magical power of editing. Whether through kidnapping or withdrawing from the world, whether in the form of fantasy comedy or thriller, mysterious absences and vanishing acts have always been regular motifs in film - and fascinating ones at that!
