Retrospectives 2021

Israel's radical filmmaker and director of Policeman (2011), The Kindergarten Teacher (2014), Synonyms (2019 Berlinale Golden Bear Award) and Ahed’s Knee (last Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize), shatters all visual, narrative, and political norms upon tackling the physical impetus of rebellion.

A comprehensive retrospective of his work (short, mid-length and feature films) in the presence of the director, panel discussions with his artistic collaborators and the filmmaker’s carte blanche screening.

In partnership with the Forum des images who will also pay tribute to the director during the 12th edition of its festival “Un état du monde” (November 12-21th)

With Murnau’s Tabu, that of Miguel Gomes, Nagisa Oshima’s In the Realm of the Senses, Alain Cavalier’s Thérèse, Paul Vecchiali’s Corps à Cœur, John Cassavetes’ Minnie and Moskovitz and Leo McCarey’s An Affair to Remember, we shall travel through the history of cinema by taking a thorough look at those films that have set our hearts ablaze.

A programme that comprises 5 films by independent filmmakers, made far from the limelight of Bollywood, to reveal those artists’ struggle against the mainstream model: with Franz Osten’s Shiraz (1928) and Payal Kapadia’s A Night of Knowing Nothing (2021), winner of the 2021 Cannes Festival Œil d’Or award.

Previously unreleased films or classics to (re)discover, including Neige by Juliet Berto and Jean-Henri Roger (1981), Paul Schrader’s The Card Counter (2021) and Golda Maria by Patrick and Hugo Sobelman (2020).

A tribute to Cecilia Mangini; a conference and screening around the current Belfort Fine Art Museum exhibition, “Fernand Léger, bringing images to life”; carte blanches screenings of the Cinémathèque Française, the Centre Pompidou and the Fondation Jérôme Seydoux-Pathé.
And… A live music screening of Vacarme, a “Music and film” masterclass with Bertrand Mandico and Pierre Desprats, DJ sets and a wonderful concert by Mansfield.TYA!

Every evening, the last film will be part of the La Nuit programme focusing on the most consuming love stories.

A first day only dedicated to children on Sunday, 21st November and screenings during the festival, on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
