Anoche conquisté Tebas

Gabriel Azorín has directed the short films Greyhounds (2012), Tomorrow, the Bullet (sélectionné à Entrevues en 2016) and The Noise of the Universe (2024). He is a member of the film collective lacasinegra. He is also artistic advisor or producer on other films. Anoche conquisté Tebas is his first feature film and premiered at Giornate degli Autori at Venise.

From a forest outing where a group of young geeks lose themselves in talking about a video game, to the nocturnal conversation of young men in Roman baths centuries earlier, Gabriel Azorin’s film invents a fascinating shift across space and time – utterly surprising and yet unfolding with quiet, almost carnal ease. At once a riddle and a key. Civilisational vestiges and contemporary technology are intertwined in novel ways. While exploring a masculine dimension of friendship – for once abundant in words – and a, perhaps uniquely youthful, connection to the seriousness of play, the film unfurls a feeling that seems to ripple, almost distill itself, through the sound of water; an intimate vibration they share secretly. Its formal audacity – all the more astonishing for its calm, welcoming grace — becomes a vessel for capturing something very precious and rare: the sense of finding oneself in the here and now, inhabiting the world – its flesh, its signs, and its fabric of imagination – with restless depth and avid curiosity for knowledge and wonder that reaches back through the ages.
