Gladys, a woman in her fifties, lives on the fringes of society. Nothing matters to her, not even dancing, which she practices with a joyful frenzy. One morning, she runs into a high-school friend, Eugénie, who tries to help her against his will.
Jérôme Reybaud directed the documentary Qui êtes-vous Paul Vecchiali? screened at FIDMarseille in 2012. His first narrative feature, Four Days in France, was released in 2017 after its international première at the Venice Festival’s Critics’ Week. His mid-length film Poitiers was selected at the 2022 Locarno Festival. A Balcony in Limoges is his third feature film.

In this comedy of manners – one would believe lighthearted – two women meet, reconnect, and try to face life together. And while the paths of Gladys and Eugénie seem to blend into one, the story instead reveals how far some are willing to go to form a community. If Hitchcock’s rear window was deliberately abstract and universal, this balcony is set in a clearly defined location, consciously crafting its sense of reality and asserting: the story is set in Limoges, in 2020s France, ravaged by a rancid ideology, where the noxious atmosphere are such that the local incident no longer amuse the voyeuristic neighbours so much as it exposes their ontological pessimism. Carrying forward La Diagonale’s legacy, Jérôme Reybaud has not forgotten Vecchialli’s preoccupation with dialectics; both his script and his direction are guided by this principle: there is woman – and woman.Victor Bournerias
