Special 30th : Exquisite Corpse

The Marquise of O

Die Marquise von O

Eric Rohmer

France / Germany
German with french subtitles

A film chosen by Joao Nicolau

A German Marquise has to deal with a pregnancy she cannot explain and an infatuated Russian Count.

What drew my attention in the image I received was the romantic quality of the photography. Was it the underexposed trees in the foreground that gave me that impression? That romantic quality made me think immediately of Kleist. Then Die Marquise von O, by Eric Rohmer, came naturally.
I usually don’t remember much of the films I watch. I retain some sensations and that’s it. So I went to check out Die Marquise von O again - there’s hardly any outside shots…
